As we begin to close out 2022 and plan for a new year, it is a great time for reflection and connection.
Reflection to check in with ourselves and see how connected we are to all of who we are…our mind, body and spirit! As you listen to what your mind is telling you about your reflection of the year, lovingly, tune in to what your body and spirit are telling you as well. As you become reconnected with yourself, is there someone you would like to connect more deeply with?
Two years ago, my partner and I went kayaking and he forgot to put sunblock on his lower legs and ended up with 2^nd degree burns. I know… how did we get to this story? Stay with me here! one day, during his healing, when the burns were at their worst and very painful, I noticed he was really anxious about what the outcome would be and he was masking his fears a bit with me. Without addressing the subject or the fear that I felt coming from him, I sat on the couch behind him and held him close with my chest against his back and my hands around his belly and invited him to breathe with me. We did this for about 10-minutes, slow breaths in through the nose and out through the nose. We began with 2-seconds on the inhale and 4-seconds on the exhale for 4-minutes, then moved to 4-seconds on the inhale and 4-seconds on the exhale for 4-minutes and we ended with 4-seconds on the inhale and 8-seconds on the exhale for 2-minutes. As we focused on our breath, we synchronized in such a beautiful
way…we connected through our breath, calmed our nervous systems and ended by facing each other, looking into each other’s eyes and sharing how grateful we were for each moment we get to share together. We shared a long embrace at the end. We go back to that “place” whenever we are feeling a bit anxious or overwhelmed and it grounds and connects us more deeply each time. It was a spontaneous moment, and has become a cherished practice between us!
I share this story with you as you can invite anyone to do this breath practice with you… either seated back-to-back on the floor with a child or a friend or straddled one behind the other with your partner or spouse. You can also do it with an infant seated or lying on a bed or couch with your infant situated across your chest – heart to heart.
Summary of the Practice: – inhale and exhale through the nose.
4- minutes 2-4 (each number represents seconds)
4- minutes 4-4
2- minutes 4-8
Remember to face each other at the end, look into each other’s eyes, say what comes to your mind first about the moment you shared together and end with an embrace. For an infant, in a soft and gently, loving voice, tell your child how much you love them and thank them for breathing with you!
Breath Challenge – Although I will not challenge you to practice this one each day this week, I will challenge you to try it with someone you would like to connect with more deeply especially during this holiday season and keep it in your breathwork toolbox for any time you want to connect with someone special in your life!
